  • Matthew A. Howard, III M.D.

    Matthew A. Howard, III joined the Department of Neurosurgery in 1993, following his residency and neurosurgical training at the University of Washington, Seattle, and was appointed as the Head of the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Iowa in July, 2001. Doctor Howard holds a joint appointment with the Department of Neurology and specializes in epilepsy surgery. His research interests include studies of hearing impairment, clinical research in epilepsy treatments, clinical models of Alzheimer's disease, magnetic stereotaxis for the treatment of focal neurological disorders, and investigations of the mechanical properties of brain tissue. He is the principal investigator of an NIH-funded research group studying the functional organization of human auditory cortex.

Ravi Ashwath M.D.


Dr. Ashwath completed his MD in India and pediatric internship and residency in New York. He completed pediatric cardiology fellowship at Case Western Reserve University followed by an advanced fellowship in cardiac MRI imaging at Boston Children’s Hospital (Harvard University). He was the inaugural director of the Pediatric Cardiac MRI Program at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital, as well as Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship Director.

Dr. Ashwath joined the University of Iowa in 2017 as Director of Non-Invasive Cardiology and Cardiac MRI. He is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Departments of Pediatrics and Radiology in the Carver College of Medicine. He is the Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship Director and Medical Director of the Pediatric Specialty Clinic. He is board certified in General Pediatrics and Pediatric Cardiology and was elected Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. His primary interest is in clinical applications of advanced imaging, including Cardiac CT and MRI, with a special focus in 3-D printing of medical models for advancing clinical care, research and teaching of trainees and families.
